WHALEN, W.J., D. BUERK, AND CLAIRE ANN THUNING. Blood jlow-limited oxygen consumption in resting cat skeletal muscle. Am. J. Physiol. 224(4) : 763-768. 1973.-In isolated, autoperfused preparations of the cat soleus (n = 10) and gracilis (n = 9) muscles, blood flow and venous and tissue Po2 were measured at several levels of perfusion pressure. Oxygen consumption (Vo2, steadystate conditions) decreased significantly with a decrease in blood flow in all the experiments. Blood flow (ml/ 100 g per min) ranged from 5 to 94 in the soleus and from 0.5 to 8.0 in the gracilis. The corresponding ranges of vo 2 (ml/l 00 g per min) were 0.38.5 and 0.05-0.55. Of 218 measurements of tissue Po2 in the soleus muscle, only 24 were below 8 mm Hg and only 14 below 5 mm Hg. In the gracilis muscle, of 138 measurements of tissue Po2, nine were below 8 mm Hg and two were below 5 mm Hg. We conclude that hypoxia in the classical sense is not responsible for the decrease in Vo2 with decreasing blood flow.

Role of resistance training with the approach of blood flow restriction in skeletal muscle cell growth

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the response of ERK1/2 protein and muscular morphological adaptations to a period of resistance training with local blood flow restriction. Materials and methods: Twenty healthy male Wistar rats without clinically evident disease (5 weeks old, 120±7 g weight) were divided into four equal groups: control, control with limited blood flow...

The effect of vasoconstrictors on oxygen consumption in resting and contracting skeletal muscle of the autologous pump-perfused rat hindlimb.

This study used a novel in vivo model to test the hypothesis that nutritive and non-nutritive blood flow distribution can still be observed under conditions of high vascular tone and oxygen delivery at rest and in metabolically active (twitch contracting) skeletal muscle. Experiments were performed in a constant flow autologous pump-perfused hindlimb in anaesthetised male Wistar rats. Agonists ...

Physiol. 226(l) : 173-l 77. 1974.-Of a total of 35 isolated blood-perfused, resting dog gracilis muscles, 25 maintained constant oxygen uptake (~oz) at all blood flows (Q) b a ove 2 ml/min X 100 g. In nine muscles, ~OZ varied with Q up to at least 10 ml/min x 100 g, reaching valu...

Skeletal muscle blood flow and oxygen uptake at rest and during exercise in humans: a pet study with nitric oxide and cyclooxygenase inhibition.

The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of nitric oxide and prostanoids on microcirculation and oxygen uptake, specifically in the active skeletal muscle by use of positron emission tomography (PET). Healthy males performed three 5-min bouts of light knee-extensor exercise. Skeletal muscle blood flow and oxygen uptake were measured at rest and during the exercise using PET with...

Is postexercise hypotension related to excess postexercise oxygen consumption through changes in leg blood flow?

After a single bout of aerobic exercise, oxygen consumption remains elevated above preexercise levels [excess postexercise oxygen consumption (EPOC)]. Similarly, skeletal muscle blood flow remains elevated for an extended period of time. This results in a postexercise hypotension. The purpose of this study was to explore the possibility of a causal link between EPOC, postexercise hypotension, a...
